Gatepost Editorial: A message for next year’s SGA eboard

The Gatepost Editorial Board

Next week, Framingham State’s Student Government Association will hold its annual elections. We at The Gatepost would like to take this opportunity to highlight some key factors we hope the new SGA officers will maintain and initiate this fall.

This year, our student government has been friendlier than in years past. According to the March 28 article, “SGA seeks to improve its image,” SGA President Larry Liuzzo said, “We’ve [SGA] done a lot to try to kind of minimize the perspective of us being ‘bullies’ on campus in charge of the money. ... I think we’ve [SGA] done a really good job this year of making it a lot more personable [and] a friendlier environment to be around.”

We at The Gatepost covered our fair share of SGA meetings and we would agree that the atmosphere has been friendlier this year. Our hope for next year’s e-board is to continue with this positive change.

When we at The Gatepost envision our future student body president, we look for qualities that will make the FSU community come together even more than it already does.

We would like our president and future SGA members to get to know their fellow students. It is important that they get to know whom they are representing because they serve as representatives for student concerns and needs.

Additionally, a student body leader, most specifically the president, should be prepared to maintain a professional relationship with the administration. Rather than doing what the administration thinks is best for the school, it is important for SGA members to take advantage of the power they have to affect change.

Next fall, SGA will have the important task of welcoming our new president, F. Javier Cevallos, on behalf of the entire student body. This is significant because they will be representing the new president’s first impression of FSU students, and also set the precedent for their ongoing relationship with him.

At the end of the day, SGA needs to continue to have students’ best interest at heart.

We at The Gatepost would like to remind our fellow peers to vote in this year’s election. It is important to be mindful of who their student leaders are because these are the people who will serve as a voice for them and their school.

SGA Election Day is Tuesday, April 8. You can vote online by logging on to CollegiateLink between 9 a.m.-5 p.m. that day.
